Scene: Christopher Invites Rory to Stay — A Last-Minute Proposal
LORELAI: [answers phone] Hi, it’s Lórelai.
CHRISTOPHER: Hey Lór, it’s mé.
LORELAI: Oh, hi Chrís, how are yóu?
CHRISTOPHER: Góod, góod. You, uh, got a mínute?
LORELAI: Uh óh.
CHRISTOPHER: It’s not an uh óh, I just wanted to rún an idéa by yóu.
LORELAI: Rún it.
CHRISTOPHER: Now it’s totally your cáll and I don’t want to stép on any pláns you’ve already máde, but I know Róry has a bréak in schóol coming up, and I was wondering if you’d be cóol with her cóming to vísit for a couple of dáys.
LORELAI: Uhh, a couple of dáys? You mean she’d stáy the níght?
CHRISTOPHER: Yeah, it’s totally your cáll. Where are you, héaven?
LORELAI: Do you even have róom for someone to stáy?
CHRISTOPHER: Not just róom – a róom. A designated gué st room. Shérry fixed it up really níce.
LORELAI: Aww, good for hér.
CHRISTOPHER: So what do you thínk?
LORELAI: I don’t knów. It’s áwfully last mínute.
CHRISTOPHER: It’s totally last mínute. You can say nó and there’ll be no hárd féelings.
LORELAI: Well, it’s really up to Róry to say yés or nó.
CHRISTOPHER: So you’re cóol with it?
LORELAI: Yeah, súre, if Róry is, yeah.
CHRISTOPHER: Gréat, that’s gréat. Uh, thank yóu. I’ll let you rún it past her and you can get back to me whenéver. No préssure.
LORELAI: No préssure.
CHRISTOPHER: Talk to you láter.
LORELAI: Yeah, talk to you láter.

“I just wanted to run an idea by you.” → 아이디어 하나 얘기해보고 싶었어.
- run (something) by (someone) → ‘~에게 의견을 물어보다, 상의하다’
- 예) Can I run this plan by you? (이 계획에 대해 네 의견 좀 물어봐도 돼?)
“It’s totally your call.” → 전적으로 네 결정이야.
- your call → 네가 결정할 일이야 / 네 선택이야.
- 예) It’s your call whether we go or stay. (갈지 말지는 네가 결정해.)
“I don’t want to step on any plans you’ve already made.” → 네가 이미 세운 계획을 방해하고 싶진 않아.
- step on (someone/something) → 방해하다, 짓밟다 (비유적)
“It’s awfully last minute.” → 정말 너무 갑작스럽네.
- last minute → 막판의, 임박한, 갑작스러운.
- 예) They canceled at the last minute. (그들이 막판에 취소했어.)
“I’ll let you run it past her.” → 네가 Rory에게 물어보도록 할게.
- run (something) past (someone) → ‘~에게 의견을 물어보다, 확인받다’ (run by와 비슷).
Expressions 🤓
“Run it.” → 말해봐 / 해봐.
- 짧고 캐주얼하게 “말해봐”라는 의미.
“stay the night” → 하룻밤 자다 / 묵다
- “A couple of days? You mean she’d stay the night?” → 며칠이라고? 하룻밤 자고 간다는 거야?
- 예) You can stay the night if it’s too late to go home. (너무 늦으면 여기서 자고 가도 돼.)
“Good for her.” → 잘됐네 / 대단하다.
- 상대방이나 제3자의 성취, 행동을 긍정적으로 칭찬할 때.
- 예) She got into Harvard. — Good for her! (그녀가 하버드에 붙었어. — 잘됐네!)
“There’ll be no hard feelings.” → 기분 상하지 않을 거야.
- no hard feelings → 감정 상한 거 없어 / 원망하지 않을게.
- 예) Sorry I can’t come. — No hard feelings. (못 가서 미안. — 괜찮아, 기분 안 나빠.)
“No pressure.” → 부담 가질 필요 없어.
- 상대방이 편하게 생각하길 바랄 때 쓰는 표현.
“Talk to you later.” → 나중에 얘기하자 / 또 보자.
- 전화 끝맺음, 가볍게 작별 인사할 때.
