Scene: Rehearsal Plans and Casual Dating

Dean: Héy.

Rory: Hí. You just gét off wórk?

Dean: Yép.

Lorelai: Héy, Déan. Do you wánt some fríes?

Dean: Nó, I’m áctually going hóme for dínner. My móm made fríed chícken toníght, and she sáved me some.

Lorelai: Óhh! You have a cóoking móm!

Rory: Thát’s so níce.

Lorelai: Wéll, she may máke chícken, but is she a cásual dáter?

Rory: Í hópe not. She’s márried.

Dean: Do I wánna know what éither one of you is tálking about?

Luke: Nópe.

Rory: Mý móther cásually dáted toníght.

Dean: Óh, well, congrátulations.

Lorelai: Thánk you. Thánk you véry much.

Dean: So I was just wóndering what tíme your rehéarsal is tomórrow.

Rory: Fíve, why?

Dean: Wéll, uh, it’s my níght óff, and I thóught maybe I’d cóme by and wátch.

Rory: Wátch what?

Dean: Wátch you.

Rory: Wátch me do whát?

Dean: Rehéarse.

Rory: Óh. Um, Déan, I thínk you’d be réally bóred wátching rehéarsal.

Lorelai: Óh yéah, I’ve dózed off twíce just lístening to her tálk about rehéarsal.

Dean: Wéll, I wón’t be bóred.

Rory: We dón’t even know our línes yet. You should just cóme on Súnday.

Lorelai: Thát’s a góod idéa. After áll, Súnday is the dáy of rést, and that’s what you’ll be dóing – résting, ’cause it’s bóring.

Rory: Móm…

Lorelai: Wéll, hóney, it’s not your fáult. You dídn’t wríte the dámn thíng.

Dean: Wéll, I’ll cóme on Súnday too.

Rory: Ókay. But if you’re gonna gó on Súnday, you dón’t wánt to spóil it for yoursélf.

Dean: Whát? It’s not like I dón’t know how it énds.

Rory: Ókay, Déan, lóok.

Dean: Róry, cóme on. I’ll sít in the báck, you’ll díe, and I’ll wálk you hóme. It’s nó bíg déal, ríght?

Rory: Ríght.

Dean: Góod, so I’ll sée you tomórrow.

Rory: Yúp, you súre will.

Dean: Býe, Lórelai.

“You just get off work?” → 방금 일 끝났어?

“get off work”는 ‘퇴근하다’라는 의미.
예) I usually get off work at 6 PM. (나는 보통 6시에 퇴근해.)

“You have a cooking mom!” → 요리하는 엄마가 있구나!

여기서 cooking은 형용사처럼 쓰여서 ‘요리하는’이라는 의미.
비슷한 표현: a working mom (일하는 엄마)

“Do I wanna know what either one of you is talking about?” → 너희 둘 중 한 명이라도 무슨 말 하는지 알아야 할까?

Do I wanna know…? → ‘알아야 하나?’ (보통 알기 싫은 내용을 앞두고 하는 말)
either one of you → 너희 둘 중 한 명

“I thought maybe I’d come by and watch.” → 그냥 들러서 구경할까 했어.

come by → ‘잠깐 들르다, 방문하다’
예) Why don’t you come by my place later? (나중에 우리 집에 잠깐 들러.)
주로 가볍게 들리는 느낌으로, 짧은 방문을 의미함.
come over와 비교:
- come by → 우연히 들를 수도 있고, 짧게 방문하는 느낌
- come over → 초대받아서 가거나, 좀 더 길게 머무를 때 사용
- 예) Come over for dinner tonight! (오늘 저녁 먹으러 우리 집에 와!)

“I think you’d be really bored watching rehearsal.” → 리허설 보면 엄청 지루할 거야.

be bored watching (something) → ‘~를 보면서 지루해하다’
예) I was bored watching that movie. (그 영화 보면서 지루했어.)

“It’s my night off.” → 오늘은 내 쉬는 날이야.

night off → 야간 근무가 없는 날 / 쉬는 날
예) Tomorrow’s my night off, so let’s hang out! (내일 쉬는 날이니까 놀자!)

“You’ll die, and I’ll walk you home.” → 넌 죽고, 난 널 집까지 데려다줄게.

walk (someone) home **→ ‘(누구를) 집까지 데려다주다’
예) He walked me home after the party. (그가 파티 끝나고 나를 집까지 데려다줬어.)

Expressions 🤓

“She saved me some.” → 그녀가 나를 위해 조금 남겨놨어.

save (someone) some (something) → ‘(누구를 위해) 약간 남겨두다’ (음식이나 물건을 남겨둘 때)
예) I saved you some cookies. (너를 위해 쿠키 좀 남겨뒀어.)

“I was just wondering what time your rehearsal is tomorrow.” → 그냥 네 리허설이 내일 몇 시인지 궁금해서.

I was just wondering ~ → ‘그냥 ~가 궁금해서’ (조심스럽게 질문할 때)
예) I was just wondering if you’re free this weekend. (그냥 이번 주말에 시간 있나 궁금해서.)
상대방에게 부담을 주지 않고 자연스럽게 질문할 때 많이 쓰이는 표현.
현재형으로도 사용 가능 → I’m just wondering if you could help me. (그냥 네가 도와줄 수 있는지 궁금해서.)

“I’ve dozed off twice just listening to her talk about rehearsal.” → 리허설 얘기하는 거 듣기만 했는데도 두 번이나 졸았어.
